The right telecom equipment can easily take the security level of a campus from something that is the bare minimum to something that will make students and parents alike feel much more secure. Educators are under pressure from families and regulators to secure their campuses; unfortunately, technology is often what is standing in the way of upgrading some key safety procedures. Communication via telecom networks is just one way that a campus can have a heightened level of safety in the event of an emergency.
There are three critical areas that deserve your attention regarding campus safety: campus notification, response coordination and awareness. Sometimes, these all must work in conjunction with one another to ensure that students in classrooms and dormitories, especially if you have a large, open campus, know about the safety threat that just presented itself.
The benefit of an improved communication system can also be seen in compliance with regulatory mandates for security. Accredited universities must have a safety protocol in place if the campus needs to go into lockdown procedures; therefore, the communication system could help you pass state standards.
Or, the communication equipment could allow interoperability between multiple parties and public safety officials. The school security guards could work with the state police or emergency crews, for instance, and then give clearly defined instructions to students. Communication between the authorities will help the directions to remain clear and focused in spite of the alarming or emotional situation.
